foleyst - Foley Street

Sign in Foley Street W1 at the junction with Cleveland Street.
This is on the corner of the former Courtauld Institute of Bio-Chemistry, which is undergoing redevelopment like many other parts of Fitzrovia.

Building work has uncovered the old signs and this is probably the situation for most of central London’s street signs. The newer metal sign is placed over the old order and thus the classic painted sign remains underneath.
As the animated image above shows, the new one barely covered the old one!
The Institute was upgraded in 1986 with a new rear extension, so perhaps that’s been its saving grace.
The Courtaulds Institute of Bio-Chemistry was an annexe belonging to the former Middlesex hospital in Mortimer Street. All it’s former health services have now transferred to University College Hospital.
